Advanced Driver Training
Take your driving further with Roadcraft, IPSGA and advanced driving techniques.
Advanced driving is about far more than simply driving faster or being more confident behind the wheel. It is about developing a higher level of observation, anticipation, planning and vehicle control so that you consistently create more time and space to deal with changing road conditions.
Elite Driver Training provides advanced driver coaching for drivers who want to improve their skills beyond the standard required to pass a licence test.
Training can be tailored to individual drivers, experienced motorists, company drivers and fleet operators.
Roadcraft and IPSGA
Advanced training is based around the principles of Roadcraft and the IPSGA System of Car Control:
Information – Position – Speed – Gear – Acceleration
Rather than reacting to hazards at the last moment, the system teaches drivers to gather information early, develop a driving plan and position the vehicle correctly before adjusting speed, selecting the appropriate gear and using acceleration to leave the hazard smoothly and safely.
The aim is to produce driving that is:
- Safe
- Systematic
- Smooth
- Progressive
- Consistent
Observation and Planning
Good drivers see what is happening immediately around them. Advanced drivers learn to identify what is likely to happen next.
Training develops longer-range observation and encourages drivers to continuously interpret the road environment, including:
- Road signs and markings
- Junctions and intersections
- Other road users
- Pedestrians and cyclists
- Road surface and weather conditions
- Vehicle positioning
- Changes in traffic flow
- Potential areas of limited visibility
The earlier a driver identifies a developing hazard, the more options they have available.
Cornering and Vehicle Positioning
Cornering is an important part of advanced driver development.
Drivers learn how to assess bends from the information available on approach, including the limit point, road signs, markings, surrounding terrain and visibility. Training focuses on:
- Correct positioning
- Appropriate approach speed
- Vision through the corner
- Smooth steering
- Balanced use of acceleration
- Maintaining a suitable safety margin
The emphasis is not on increasing speed, but on improving accuracy, stability and planning.
Commentary Driving
Commentary driving can be introduced as drivers progress.
Talking through what you can see, what it means and what you intend to do develops concentration and helps create a structured thought process behind the wheel.
Commentary may include See – Interpret – Predict – Plan – Act.
Used effectively, commentary helps drivers recognise hazards earlier and demonstrates that driving decisions are based on observation and planning rather than reaction.
Progressive Driving
Progressive driving means making appropriate progress when conditions allow while always maintaining safety.
It involves:
- Reading the road well ahead
- Creating space
- Selecting safe overtaking opportunities
- Avoiding unnecessary braking
- Maintaining suitable following distances
- Positioning effectively
- Using acceleration smoothly
- Adjusting the drive to changing conditions
A progressive driver should appear calm and unhurried while still making efficient progress.
Corporate and Fleet Driver Development
Advanced training is available for businesses and organisations wanting to improve the standard of their fleet drivers.
Training may include:
- Individual driver assessments
- Advanced observation and hazard awareness
- Roadcraft/IPSGA development
- Defensive driving
- Commentary driving
- Rural and open-road driving
- Motorway driving
- Cornering and vehicle control
- Driver attitude and decision-making
- Coaching following incidents or identified driving concerns
Programmes can be developed around the needs of individual drivers or organisations.

Tailored Advanced Driver Coaching
There is no single advanced driving lesson that suits everybody.
