Driving experience is valuable at every age. A personalised refresher lesson can help you adapt to changing roads, revisit the latest rules and feel confident in your everyday driving.

Elite Driver Training offers friendly, one-to-one senior driver lessons across Waikanae, Waikanae Beach, Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach, Raumati, Raumati Beach, Ōtaki and the wider Kāpiti Coast.

Older driver licence renewal in New Zealand

NZ driver licences are generally renewed at age 75, again at 80, and then every two years. A medical certificate is required for renewal at these ages. An on-road safety test is not automatically required for everyone; you may be asked to take one depending on your circumstances and medical assessment.

Our refresher is practical coaching, not a medical assessment or official NZTA driving test. If you have been asked to complete an on-road safety test, we can help you refresh the relevant driving skills ahead of it. For official rules, visit NZTA's older-driver renewal guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone over 75 need a driving test?

No. An on-road safety test may be required in some cases, but it is not automatically part of every senior licence renewal.

Can I use my own vehicle?

Yes, provided it is roadworthy and legally compliant. You can also choose the EDT vehicle if appropriate.

What if I just want a confidence boost?

That's a great reason to book. You don't need an upcoming licence renewal or test to benefit from a refresher lesson.
